Winona Laura Horowitz, known by her stage name Winona Ryder, is an American actress. She has received a number of awards, including a Golden Globe and is nominated for two Academy Awards. She is known for playing quirky roles in her earlier films, then playing larger roles in the 1990s. After Ryder's debut in Lucas, she drew attention with performances in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. She also became famous with leading roles in Heathers, Mermaids, Edward Scissorhands and Bram Stokerer's Dracula. She has received critical acclaim and two consecutive Oscar nominations for the role of gangster May Welland in Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence and Jo March in the third film adaptation of Little Women. Her other films during this period are Reality Bites, How to Make an American Quilt, The Crucible, Alien Resurrection, Celebrity and Girl, Interrupt also directed by her.
She got her start as a teenager in the 1988 Tim Burton film Beetlejuice, as Lydia Deetz, and went on to star in films including Mermaids, Edward Scissorhands, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Little Women, and Girl, Interrupted. She is also a cast member of the Netflix original series Stranger Things.
